There have been several significant advances since the initial publishing of these books in 2002. Here is a list that you may want to investigate.
1. Methyl-B12. Dr. Neubrander's protocol employing methyl-B12 shots is very important for the autistic and also for anyone who has been mercury poisoned. You need a prescription for these shots. An alternative to these shots is nasally administered methyl-B12. Methyl-mate from New Beginnings is one place to find a methyl-B12 liquid without additives. If the methyl-B12 causes undo agitation / hyperactivity, then consider eliminating or reducing the use of folinic aid / folate and TMG / DMG.
2. Cod liver oil has been helpful for many of the autistic. However, be careful with cod liver oil. The ratio of vitamin A to D might not be appropriate for your child. Vitamin A can suppress vitamin D levels, possibly making a deficit of vitamin D much worse. There can also be the opposite problem. If you are on Dr. Marshall’s protocol for Lyme, you have to avoid all sources of vitamin D. Another potential problem. Vitamin D increases the need for vitamin K and may deplete it. Since with dysbiosis, our intestinal flora may not be making enough vitamin K, it may be important to supplement this vitamin. Vitamin K is one of the vitamins that Amy Yasko, MD gives to her autistic and dysbiosis patients.
3. New Chelators. Many new chelation agents have been introduced in the intervening years. Investigate the Transdermal DMPS (TD-DMPS) with glutathione that Dr. Rashid Buttar has been using. Also check out a product called Natural Cellular Defense, a form of zeolite. Modified Citrus Pectin was also not well known as a chelator at the time the books were written. Pecta-Sol is the brand that has been studied the most. There is a new chelator call OSR, developed by Boyd Haley, PhD and sold only through CTI Science, Inc.
4. Iodine. The skin test for iodine mentioned in the books cannot be relied upon even as a general indicator. You need to measure iodine in the urine employing a loading test. Look up the work being done by Dr. David Brownstein. Be careful though. Too much iodine is harmful. (Soy depletes iodine, and so does exposure to bromides. If this applies to you, consider that you might have a deficiency of iodine.) About half of the people with autism will test low in iodine.
5. Anti-virals and autism. Look up Stan Kurtz and how much anti-virals helped his child even though the child’s viral titres were not measured as high. His kid started dumping the metals with this treatment. No chelation was needed or used. He has noticed that this treatment will cause a flare in yeast problems, so anti-fungals will also have to be employed along with the anti-virals.
6. New probiotics. Dr. Mercola has endorsed the use of L. Sporogenes as he has seen the broadest number of patients benefit from this. You can reach the distributor and purchase it at http://www.natural-energetics.com/index.html (877) 421-0939. There is a helpful strain of E. coli that I haven’t heard much about, but there is scientific evidence of its effectiveness in getting rid of diarrhea, constipation , inflammation and halitosis. http://www.ardeypharm.de/en There are also probiotics from www.customprobiotics.com that do not produce lactic acid.
7. Homeopathics. Dr. Lee Cowden has a new method for delivering homeopathics --- via laser light. This is supposed to be very effective. Unfortunately, there are very few practitioners at this time. http://www.laserdetox.com/
8.Curezone. In the intervening years, another forum / website has come into prominence --- Curezone. Their information on detoxification is particularly interesting.
9. Ubiquinol. A new form of CoQ10 called ubiquinol is more effective than plain CoQ10.
10. Ribose. Dr. Teitlebaum recommends that fibromyalgia / CFS patients try Ribose, which is a sugar that is particularly effective in raising the energy levels of cells. Treatment may have to be continued for up to a month before the benefits are seen.
11. Diet. A low oxalate diet is important for some of the autistic. The high oxalate levels seem to be coming from the bad yeast / bacteria in the gut. Also, a diet high in cholesterol can be beneficial, especially if their cholesterol is too low (less than 160). Cholesterol is needed for proper functioning of the brain. It also protects the body from endotoxins. Cholesterold deficiency is common in autism.
12. Mixture of Glutamine with alpha ketoglutaric acid . Several of our forum members have mentioned that plain glutamine makes them feel well and then later it makes them feel worse. If you only use glutamine, you run the risk of depleting alpha ketoglutaric acid and other keto forms of amino acids. The Perque Endura Guard product is a mixture of glutamine, alpha ketoglutaric acid and B6. Yeast deplete all three of of these. I strongly suspect that this mixture will be tolerated better than plain glutamine. You can read more about this mixture at this website. www.perque.com (Like glutamine, it may cause constipation in larger quantities.)
13. Avoid the use of compact fluorescent light bulbs, especially the non-shielded variety. Many of these are defective --- they emit too much electromagnetic radiation in the wrong frequency bands. Full specturm lighting is the best for your health. Personally, I like the incancescent full spectrum lights found at www.1000bulbs.com They are only $3 each for the 60 watt bulbs. During the night, you may sleep better if you turn off the electricity at the circuit breakers to your house. At least turn off the electricity to the bedrooms and surrounding rooms. With less electromagnetic radiation at night, this will take some of the strain off of your immune system.
