Vitamin D
I haven't posted much for years,
but I see some of the same names here.
I'm writing because I may have
finally found the cause and a cure.
The treatment may apply to some
of you as well. Some of you might
recall I have lots of trouble due to
high mercury, motion sensitivity,
sore throat and tongue, digestion
problems and thyroid issues. Years
ago I did the anti-candida diet for a
long time, tried all the antifungals
but with little success. I was close
to death twice, and had my thyroid
removed due to cancer, all by age 40.
The key discovery came for me when
I tried taking vitamin D supplements.
Taking 1000 to 2000 units of vitamin D
made me feel better for a day or two,
then markedly worse. I'd stop, try
again, and have the same strange results.
Blood tests of vitamin D (it comes in
two forms, the precursor 25D and the
active 1,25D) revealed my 25D was low
and my 1,25D abnormally high.
According to new research, that's the
hallmark of an intracellular bacterial
infection. The result is the immune
system becomes grossly imbalanced,
and one of the many ways that can show
itself is in digestion problems. It's called
Th1 overexpression.
My digestion troubles (bloating, dysbiosis)
made the doctors think candida, but the
antifungal meds did virtually nothing
for me. If you have experienced similar,
you might want to check your vitamin D levels.
The treatment for this is called the Marshall
Protocol, and I'm getting ready to start it.
There's a boatload of information about the
problems, the symptoms of Th1
overexpression, and treatment at

Best of luck and wishes for good
health for all here,
steve
hey steve
please let us know how it goes! it is something i as a lymie am interested. a numer of us lyme folks are trying the vitamin c and salt (http://lymephotos.com/), which also has a thriving yahoo news group. Need to stay on it for a couple of years to see if it really works ut a numer of folks have had tremendous success on it over at the newsgroup. I report here from time to time on it (have een on it for 4 months) and hope you will continue to report on your reactions to the MP!

steve, I am sorry to keep asking you questions about this. I went to the web site and it is full of good information. However , it would not post any doctors names due to privacy for the doctors. I was unable to access any email addresses when I clicked on and also could not register. Is there a web site that tells you where you could get a doctor to test you? I live in California.
I had thought they had lists
of doctors, but now I can't
find the lists on the MP
site either.
Are you seeing any doctor
about candida? Most likely
that doctor would be willing
to order the proper
vitamin D tests. That
or a naturopath or
nutritionist.

Thanks for posting this steve. There have been people who have shared on the forum that they have many candida symptoms but taking antifungals dont help. Is this test something that a mainstream doctor will order or do you have to have an alternative doc order it for you?
Liz - A vitamin D blood test is commonly
done by most labs, so is readily available.
Probably any doctor who has been treating
someone for candida would be willing to
order one. It's critical to get both 25D and
1,25D tested as their ratio is significant.
If your doctor won't, the marshallprotocol.com
site has lists of doctors that are familiar with
the MP, and thus will order the vitamin D test.
My results were abnormal even by the
standards of the lab (conventional medicine).
There's another group of people I see here
who might consider the MP: those with
Lyme-like symptoms. The symptoms of
Th1 overexpression are similar to those of
Lyme. My results for Lyme were negative,
but for years I had doctors telling me my
symptoms were like those of Lyme disease,
but they could not explain why. Now we
think we know.
I had my vitamin d levels checked several years ago by my allopathic doctor but I am not sure what type of test it was. I didnt know that there were two different types. He told me that my vitamin D was way low and prescribed a large amount for me. I was unable to tolerate this amount and can only take small amounts. I will look into this further. It is really helpful to have this information that you shared because candida and lyme are very valied diseases but many people do not respond to the treatments and this may be the missing link.
Liz - Yes, your odd reaction to vitamin D
sounds similar to mine. According to the
Marshall Protocol people, the bacterial
infection causes 25D to be too rapidly
converted to the active 1,25D. That tends
to deplete your 25D, and raise your 1,25D
to abnormally high levels. Taking vitamin
D supplements only adds more fuel for the
infection, and you feel sicker. If you just
have a regular vitamin D blood test, it's
usually only the 25D part.
So if you are low in vitamin D and then cant take it, what do you do?Also, what specific test should I ask for? Thanks Steve. I will say that I do respond to natural antifungals with candida but still the vitamin D could be a problem.
Liz - According to the MP, the way
to correct the vitamin D problem is
to kill off the bacterial infection. They
say that infection consumes 25D as fuel
and converts it to too much 1,25D.
Vitamin D is basically a steroid
hormone, and imbalances in hormones
can cause all sorts of illness. You
should have both 25D and 1,25D tested.

Thanks steve
Hi Steve,
Glad you are doing better and finally found out what is wrong. Recently, my dr. ran a vitamin D test and I'm waiting for the results. I do not know if he ran both tests or not. Thanks for supplying this important info regarding this test.
Keep us posted from time to time to let us know how you are.
Was your thyroid problem related to this condition?
Pace - Subsequent to having my thyroid
removed, I discovered my symptoms were
reduced by taking higher-than-recommended
doses of thyroid hormone. No doctor could
explain it. This week online I found the
answer: research shows that hyperthyroidism
tends to suppress Th1 levels. The Marshall
Protocol people say that once on the treatment,
many thyroid patients discover they don't
need to take as much thyroid hormone.
Dpctors need to be aware of this as it is a critical piece to the puzzle. I dont know how you would get them to listen when they dont even believe in candida.
Thank you for caring enough to share the results of your research. It is very compassionate to come back here to help after all that you have been through. I did not know you prior to this posting, but nevertheless I feel very connected to this board and all of its member old and new. Many Blessings,
I feel the same way Penny
