Hair Loss
I found this posting in the Ask Andreas archives over on Curezone. I thought it maybe of interest to those of us on here who seem to be loosing lots of hair (myself included).
Andreas:
When people go off a non-nutritious diet and live a more healthy lifestyle, the body goes from the mode of accumulating toxins and waste to the mode of eliminating toxins and waste. As the body is trying to rid itself of the toxins, the pathways of elimination can easily get clogged up. If protein foods such as meat, fish, cheese etc. were part of the diet the body may also throw out a lot of the excessive proteins stored in the blood vessel walls. Hair is basically a protein waste product of the body and so are the nails. If too much of all of this travels to the hair folicles they may suffocate and the hair falls out. When making such changes in your life, make sure to keep the colon, kidneys and liver bile ducts as clean as possible, in order to prevent the body from using other routes of elimination such as the skin and hair. In addition, when detoxifying strongly (versus accumulating toxins) the body has to give up more MINERALS than is usual - especially SULFUR, the primary mineral for detoxification. This can affect hair health. Many plant foods especially green leafy vegetables contain sulfur and are very helpful. Also broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, legumes and sunflower seeds contain sulfur. If not enough, MSM is a great good source of it. There are studies to show significant improvements in hair growth and nails among people using MSM, in fact in 80% of the subjects compared with the placebo group. When starting on MSM it is important to start slowly at the lowest dosage and then gradually build up every few days to 3,000-5,000 milligrams, otherwise there will be unpleasant side-effects (not that MSM has anything in it to harm the body, but making adjustments too fast can upset the body). Follow directions on the product bottle.
Andreas MortizAnyone tried MSM with postive or negative side-effects??? Which brands are reputable??? Thanks
Amanda

That makes sense and there are special shampoos that you can buy in beauty supply stores that kind of chelate toxins on your scalp. People that have had surgerys are advised to use them to draw toxins out of the pores in the scalp. Most beauticians should be familiar with these. Just my opion but the only thing that has been benefical for me was to use antifungal shampoos.
Nizoral has several FDA trials showing it to be beneficial for hair loss.
I have lost hair several times over the last ten years. The first time I tested positive for Sinensis(sp?) a parasite that can only be contracted through eating raw fish. The second time (more recently) I tested for low iodine levels. The iodine supplement I use is made by Nestmann's and the hair loss has slowed noticeably. To be safe and to ensure a thicker head of hair I have added some other nutrients namely an herbal infusion of Nettles, homeopathic Arnica 30C (succussed) and Shen Min, an herbal product containing Fo-Ti Tieng that is clinically shown to grow hair.
Hi Amanda,
I, too, am losing a lot of hair. I go back to my wellness clinic tomorrow to find out what I can do. I have just started high doses of Biotin (2,000 mcg/day) and have added Magnesium Citrate (400mg/day). The hair loss started with intense itching/burning in my scalp that had at least 7 doctors scratching their own heads! As a woman who has always had a lot of hair, it has been devastating to me, the not knowing what is going on. My doctor at the wellness clinic did tell me I had Candida, but I did not know it would be so hard to treat. Initially, I was told to do the yeast-free diet only 30 days, which I did, and take the Nystantin and Diflucan. The burning stopped, but everything went out of whack again a few weeks after that. And, the hair loss continues. So, have recently started everything all over again. But, I'm losing lots of hair and fear it may not grow back. I will ask my doctor tomorrow about the MSM, as well as the Nizoral anti-fungal shampoo Liz mentioned in an earlier post. I know I have a fungal infection in my scalp that is Candida-related because after many questions as to what was causing the burning, I was able to identify that it all intensified if I ate/drank anything that contained yeast or sugar. I'd like to hear more about your situation. Until I came upon this forum, I had not heard of anyone who had hair loss due to Candida. I wish you the very best. Believe me, I know what you're going through.
I know just what you are talking about when you mention the itching and burning after eating carbs. I get that also when I have to take antibiotics. Using selsun blue with aloe and jojoba oil which will help the dryness and also is good for the scalp is a good adjunct to the nizerol shampoo. Be sure to leave the shampoo on for about 5 minutes and make sure it gets on the scalp instead of just the hair. Tea tree is also good to put on the nite before .
It's so disheartening that doctors think this can be cleared up in only 30 days. If that were only the case -sigh* My nurse pract kept taking me of of Diflucan after just a few weeks duration ( she kept saying it was bad for my liver- which I am sure it was ). It just makes the yeast resistant though when they do that.
Hi Amanda,
I don't know where Andreas learned his physiology but I doubt it was out of any recognised textbook. The body doesn't store proteins in the blood vessels, hair and nails are not waste products and hair follicles don't suffocate.
During digestion and metabolism proteins are broken down into their respective amino acids, which are used throughout the body to synthesize new proteins. Excess amino acids are used for energy or stored as fat.
Hair loss on the other hand has to do with toxicity, hormones, drug side effects or nutritional deficiencies. Lack of iron for example will cause hair loss, as can Fluoxetine (Prozac),use of Steroids or lack of essential fatty acids.
IS THE PART ABOUT USING 3,000-5,000 MG OF MSM TRUE TO HELP CORRECT HAIR LOSS?
Hi Timmy,
I doubt MSM has ever been tested for hair loss. In fact I don't think its actually been tesed for much at all.
Here's a website that gives some background about MSM

Hi Steve
My guess is more than half the things on here that people take or recommend for this that and other have neither been tried nor tested. Seems like we are the guinea pigs....because we are basically on our own with this stuff. Hmmm....you remind me of my doctor!
