Wellbutrin

wellbutrin/candida??
Hi there,
I was wondering if any of you have taken an anti-depressant while dealing with systemic candida problem? Do you know how these chemical drugs may affect the candida condition?? I hate to resort to a prescription anti-depressant but I'm having a very difficult time right now and need to do something...I'm feeling desperate...
I have a free prescription of wellbutrin but I'm kinda scared to take anything anymore especially a chemical drug...

Re: wellbutrin/candida??
Kristin-
I took wellbutrin and a series of other anti-depressants starting in 1999 for a year or more.

I had been sick all of my life (asthma, allergies, chronic flu) and i got really worn out my first year at college and got very sick at the end and I think thats when my problems became more serious, very weak pale frail, longer colds, more serious colds, and depression. i was also very intense racing thoughts, and then would become very weak and sleeping a lot.

i began seeing an amazing phychiatrist who really helped me, and put me on low doses of all of the anti- depressants we tried. she always knew there was something else wrong with me so after a year or so of thinking i was just clinically depressed she made me see a doctor to get tested for chronic fatigue syndrome which i have and various other associated virus'. i stopped taking the anti- depressants.....after years of trying to get the cfs and virus' under control and seeing several terrible doctors ive managed to start getting better now by changing my diet and taking vitamins (and of course several other factors)...i still have ups and downs but not nearly as bad as i was...wow...i was all over the place then.... in retrospect, the medication (which i took low doses of) didnt help as much as did the therapy and support from seeing a psychiatrist that was amazing and didnt try to stuff me with pills - she was big into natural healing too (acupuncture meditation)... everyone is differnt though so in your case it might be different- but in my opinion i think really that you should find a good psychiatrist who practices both traditional and natural and looks at you and your medical history as a total package...then if the person decides to give you meds they can also support you with vitamins and other natural ways to help keep the candida in control... if you have any questions please post me--i was in a very depressed state for years and years (not able to move or wake from sleep for almost an entire summer because of cfs) and finally starting to see a the light now that i am proactive and changing my diet...(and out of school and grad school---living on coke and poptarts and all nighters not good for you haha). be well!

Re: wellbutrin/candida??
Lauren, i'm struggling with CFS and genuinely want to know how you were able to recieve food during the summer you were mostly sleeping. Did you need a feeding tube? Were you hospitalized?

Re: wellbutrin/candida??
Depression is a serious condition and requires medical intervention. I doubt anyone has evaluated interaction between ADs and Candida.
Personally I would seek out medical assistance for the depression and follow the prescribed treatment.
In my experience, xenobiotics can cause depression as well as dysbiosis with candida overgrowth so there may well be an external cause to your problems.

Re: wellbutrin/candida??
Hi Kristin,

Have you considered trying St. John's Wart or Sam-e or Melatonin or Vitamin B12? I would look at these things first before going with Wellbutrin. If you take Wellbutrin when in fact you are deficient in B12 it will make matters worse for you.
Re: wellbutrin/candida??
Pace, does welbutrin deplete your vitamin b-12? I have a friend who takes this medication and I do not think she is aware of this. She does take vitamins although I dont know how consistant. Maybe with this type of situation, she would need a vitamin b 12 injection.

Re: wellbutrin/candida??
liz,

What I meant to say is, if you are B-12 deficient and are given an anti-depressant, you are receiving the wrong medicine. Not only are you getting the wrong medicine, you are not receiving the right treatment which will make your condition worse.

I do not know if WB depletes any vitamins.

Pace
