Atlas Neck
A friend just called me and immediately blurted out "it worked." She had just got her top vertebra (atlas) adjusted by Ranan Shahar here in Los Angeles, and it immediately got rid of all of her dizziness. No more dizziness medication needed at all. As for myself, I reported that the atlas adjustment by Ranan had helped my hearing. Well, my hearing is still gradually improving. Last night, I could actually understand each and every word in an old song on the radio. It was really weird. Previously, I could only understand about three words in that particular song. It was such a shock to hear words to that melody. I was literally hearing the song for the very first time.
From what others have said here on the board, efficacy depends on who you see to get this adjustment. If you happen to live near Los Angeles, I suggest you try Ranan Shahar, who uses the atlasprofilax method. Enough of my friends have seen him and gotten good results that I can honestly recommend him. If you don't live near Los Angeles, then look at the list of practitioners at www.upcspine.com These practitioners specialize in adjusting the atlas and axis.
I go to a chriropractor here who only does atlas ajustments. It is actually called "Atlas family chiropractic". It makes a huge difference to me as far as feeling dizzy etc..when mine is out. I also have ringing in my ears when it's out. And the ajustment is painless.
It certainly is a different way of putting the atlas back then. This atlasprofilax method hurts while the vertebra is being coaxed back into place. They use a series of rapid light taps. One tap isn't enough to hurt, but the series does hurt.
It is strange. I did the one tap thing, couldn't imagine it could do anything, but I had a really bad neck ache for the rest of the day/night. When I wouldn't hold it for more than a day at a time, he did do 2 or 3 taps and that is when I started to hold for longer periods of time. Last night I was doing yoga and I felt a pop right in that area..so far I feel ok, but I wonder if I un-did it?
Hi Polly,
These adjustments sound really interesting!
When I wear a shirt with horizontal stripes, you can easily tell that my shoulders slope. This makes me wonder if the subsequent stress on my spine, etc. is trashing my immune function... and making it difficult to fight the lyme. I also wonder if this is at least partly responsible for my detox problems, including the violent responses to chelation.
A few q's....
How many adjustments have you had? Do you have any ideas how many you'll recieve.
I presume Dr. Shahar adjusts based on x-rays. How many x-rays does he need? One per adjustment?
It is one adjustment. (Current cost $250) No exrays. He spends a little time showing you how your neck moves and how it affects your spine before and after the adjustment. Also shows you a movie that explains what will be done. It only takes a few minutes for the actual adjustment. You are done in a half hour or less. Time spent depends somewhat on how long you want to stay there and marvel at the difference.
I spoke with someone who went to a chiropractor who used the orthogonal method and lots of exrays. The atlas was back in place after two adjustments. Total cost of $300. Then there are others who say they go to their upper cervical spine chiropractors forever. Seems to be a big difference in practitioners and techniques.
I do the orthogonal method and it did take a few times for it to hold, but it does hold now, even when I do yoga.
I think it also depends on how far out the atlas is. I started seeing an upper cervical chiropractor that was on the upcspine web site. I really like her, she made no promises concerning my multiple sclerosis symptoms.... she did determine that my neck was off by 9, something that those who have been to one of these chiros will have an understanding of. She said she only sees this usually in people that have had bad car accidents or head trauma... which I do not have in my history. She warned me would take about 12 adjustments to see any response. I have had about six of them. My first consult with her was $50 and $100 for x-rays. Each subsequent adjustment has been $35 (Canadian). I can turn my neck further to the right, and they seem to be seeing less spasticity generated by neck movement. My very first symptom of MS was Lhermitte's, which is electrical shocks down the spine when you flex your neck forward. This seems to be slightly less also. I will continue going as I think that it is helpful so far, and frankly I haven't found much that helps. I also wore a TMJ splint years ago, which did nothing. My job is cracking when I open my mouth wide. The chiro said that the upper atlas controls a TMJ joint. It doesn't hurt, it is just crackling.
