Ferritin Testing

Iron Testing
What type of iron test did you have? I know now I have been anemic all my life. My Dr. just took a B12 test and mine was skyhigh as I had an IV the day before.

I'm not exactly sure what kind it was. I am taking Solgar Gentle Iron because of the type of test I had. I don't know why that is exactly, but my doctor is awesome so I just trust him. I feel so much better, its unreal! He told me that low iron can also cause low white blood cells and I have had that forever. I'll ask him exactly what the test was and let you know.

I also always thought candida made people anemic, but when I went to see Mercola he did a ferritin test on me and my ferritin was exceedingly high. My serum iron was in range but in high/normal range. Mercola said I have hemochromatosis, which is a genetic iron overload disease that can kill by cancer or heart disease. According to another dr. I have been going to, inflammation from candida can also cause high iron/ferritin levels. Next week I'm going to take the DNA hemochromatosis test to make sure one way or the other. If I do have it I will have to give blood every two months until it comes down to normal and then have it checked frequently. Giving blood is the only treatment they currently have for the disease. It is also very genetically inclined and my whole family will have to be careful.

I am so confused about Iron. I want to keep taking it until my leves is normal, but I do worry about the underlying infection thing. I DO feel better now that I have been on it for 3 weeks. I have been feeling ill for a few days recently, but I think its because I ate gluten for a while prior to the blood test. I have typical (for me) gluten symptoms.

When you give blood for your high iron, they should give it to people like me w/not enough, lol!

If you are having blood drawn when needed, this should help alot. A friend of mine found out that she had it when her brother was diagnosed. She feels alot better since finding out and having her blood drawn every month. It also runs in my family. I think that you have to have both parents be carriers, one be a carrier and one parent have it or both parents have it but am not sure. Vitamin C intake is something you have to be careful with because it can cause you to absorb more iron. My friend was told that her was causing her depression.

Judy isnt the iron overload a simple test? I didnt know that candida could influence your iron overload problem. I know that this condition can influence the heart and other organs. Women ususally dont have to worry until after menopause. Have you ever heard about a condition that can cause anemia with hematacritosis? That is to bad that you felt worse after having blood drawn. My father said that it didnt seem to make him feel better or worse either way but my friend sure feels alot better after having her condition monitered thru blood drawing. Yes, this posting problem is getting to be a pain. It discourages me from posting or reading much below.
Shari, I did take a minute to read some posts that I hadnt previously read and I still feel confused about the cafta issue and how this will affect us but I wanted to tell you that I got a GOOD laugh out of your comment that you were on the 20 year plan to get well. I can relate.take care

I got a GOOD laugh that you were laughing :) I also like your header.

Everyone seems to differ in their interpretation of codex and cafta. I would like to see what your newspaper had to say. I'm gonna try to take a nap now, but will write you more on this later.

Hope you are feeling well, liz.

ferritin test
Generally the test they use is just a simple blood test measuring ferritin levels. Mine was 350, which is diagnosed as hemochromatosis. But, my hormone dr. said some of the other iron numbers don't fit in right. Even though my ferritin is high, my iron was medium range and my iron saturation was actually low. This dr. was head of hemotology at Hinsdale Hospital for years and, of course, is very good with blood results. He doesn't belive it's hemochromatosis, but wants to be sure. He said that inflammation and illness can also cause ferritin levels to go up, that's why he recommended the DNA test. That way we can tell if it's actual hemochromatosis or inflammation causing it. I'm not sure how he will deal with it if it's inflammation!?
