Store Bought Yogurt
Is there anyway to continue to ferment store bought yogurt like Stonyfield Plain Organic. It is too sugary for me. I am weary of the soy yog. I am estrogen dom. I have heard that you can leave buttermilk out on the countertop to ferment. Can you do this with yogurt. Or leave it in the fridge until way past expiration?
It's funny you asked this question, because I have been meaning to ask it for a year or so. A few months back I experimented a bit by leaving 7 Stars Yog. out at room temperature for a few days after I bought it. I can't say for sure whether the acidification process continued, but it certainly didn't spoil. My best guess is that if the brand of yougurt truly has viable probios in it, it should happen. I've sort of shifted from yogurt to cheese these days, but if I get back into yogurt maybe I'll run some more home experiments and let you know.
Thank you for your reply. You seem to be the only one who understands what I meant.
I use Stonyfield as a starter all the time. I have been making my own yogurt for 24 years. I use organic milk to be sure I don't get those hormones etc. You have to keep it at the right temperature so you have to use a yogurt maker or a thermos bottle. i reccomend yogormet. It tastes so much better than store bought yogurt of any kind!
It's very easy to ferment yogurt at home useing a few tablespoons of Stoneyfield as a culture starter. You can also ferment the yogart for a full 24 hours. This is MUCH longer than commerically made yogurt, and results in a yogurt with more active lactobacteria and much less lactose.
