Gluten Intolerance
Hello,I used to follow this forum years ago when I was suffering from Candida.
I'm much better now, except that I am stuck with gluten intolerances and am told that there is no cure for this beside avoiding gluten.
I have trouble submitting to this. Does anyone know anything about any real cures? Links would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Hi James,
Elaine Gottchalk's Specific Carbohydrate Diet, if observed strictly for from one to two years, claims to heal the gut from gluten intolerance in many patients. Her diet and book, Break the Vicious Cycle, can be accessed at www.scdiet.org.
This diet has helped me a LOT.
Best of luck.

I'm dealing with candida overgrowth, and have had gluten intolerance since as far back as I can remember. It affects me in a severe way, including mentally. If I do consume gluten, usually by retrial or mistake, I've found that the powerful protein enzyme, Serrapeptase, seems to help best. Also MSM to help minimise possible leakage. Shame, cos I used to love pizza and bread.
Some people can manage to heal from gluten intolerance, but I think most cannot. And I do think there are a lot more glutenintolerant than we normally know of.
Is Oprah Winfrey glutenintolerant, or she just avoids bread but eats spaghetti? I am sure there are many who gets bloated from gluten, for example my mom!
I had an appointment with my lyme doctor today, and his college-aged receptionist is a lyme patient, who btw has a sister and BOTH parents who have been dx'd with lyme. She claimed that her family believes mom gave lyme to both children in utero.
At any rate, I talked to her for a while, and one of the first questions she aske me was if I was gluten intolerant. I told her of course, and she claimed her entire family was as well... that it was hard for a person her age to socialize with gluten intolerance.
The link of lyme to gluten intolerance isn't perfectly clear, but two factors could easily play a role. First, lyme suppresses the immune system and very naturally leads to gut infections that inflame the gut. The inflamed gut leads to leaky gut which leads to food intolerances. Giardia seems to be one of the big players. I've had a severe 4+ giardia infection that clearly was accompanied with debilitating food intolerances. The receptionist's sister apparently has had a problem with giardia.
Second, lyme is clearly associated with heavy metal toxicity which is related to gluten intolerance, as mercury deactivates the enzyme responsible for digesting gluten.
One reason lyme patients accumulate metals is probably due to the fact that lyme appears to suck us dry of glutathione, an essential biochemical used in removing oxidized mercury from within cells. Without it we start to accumulate metals.
Further, lyme patients naturally start to lose their normal flora, which feeds back into both the heavy metal AND gut dysbiosis.
If you hung out in the lyme community, you'd find EXACTLY the same profile of health problems as you see here.... parasites, dysbiosis, candida, gluten intolerance, BRAIN FOG is perhaps the most common complaint, fatigue. The only difference is that everyone has been dx'd with lyme.
Given how easily the bug primarily responsible for lyme is contracted (numerous insects have been shown to carry it, including mosquitos and biting flies; in utero; sexually transmiscible,) given the commonality of the symptoms of lyme with that of the chronically ill patients at large, and given the lack of interest in lyme from the established medical community, it seems clear that far MORE chronically ill patients should be investigating lyme/heavy metal toxicity than currently are. I feel that EVERYONE with gluten intolerance should investigate the possibility.
Of interest, before my appt with the lyme doctor, a family consisting of mom and 3 sons, the eldest also college aged, left his office. ALL sons spoke freely how they contracted lyme from mom, and since we were on the topic, the receptionist asked one of the kids if they were gluten intolerant and he responded that the entire family was indeed.
i'm dealing with a similar issue. I cleared the candida hurdle, but am left with several food intolerances. I'm exploring whether other parasites could be an issue. Its not for everyone's taste, but urine therapy has been a huge help in clearing food intolerance issues so far, but I do have some work to yet.

The answer to your question depends on the cause of the intolerance. If you are suffering from Celiac Disease, a lifelong autoimmune intestinal disorder, found in individuals who are genetically susceptible, then part of the treatment is lifelong abstinance from Gluten.
Another possible cause of Gluten intolerance is gut dysbiosis. Normally, the proteins of Gluten are broken down to their constituent amino acids by a series of enzymes and bacteria in the gut. When the correct bacteria are missing and replaced by pathogenic gram negative bacilli, gluten may no longer be digested properly and instead of breaking down to amino acids, only some of the protein bonds are cut, leaving chains of amino acids called peptides. Certain peptides are biologically highly active, for example the opio-peptides, which bond to the opio-receptors in the brain. In the event of dysbiosis, the gut walls tend to pass larger molecules (leaky gut syndrome), allowing these partially digested peptides to pass out of the gut and into the blood stream. Gluten (and Casein) are known to form opio-peptides in the absence of certain gut micro-organisms.
In cases of Gluten intollerance its important to know if its Celiac Disease or Dysbiosis. Untreated, CD can damage the walls of the intestine and may eventually require surgical intervention. In dysbiosis, its important to isolate and correct its cause and provide therapy to repopulate the gut with healthy bacteria. Once the balance of healthy bacteria is restored the gut will heal itself and inteolerances will gradually disappear.
Hi James
You may want to try enzymes that break down gluten
I think its possible to overcome this if you heal your gut/immune system. I'm not saying that everyone can, but some I believe do.
You may want to try phoning Dr. Sherry Rogers office and asking what they recommend (a book, a newsletter, a consult)..
good luck!
