What happens when a human being eats protein?
The protein passes through the stomach and into the duodenum, where varios enzymes cleave the bonds between amino acids, which are absorbed through the intestinal walls and into your digestive system.
Last sentence should read
....which are absorbed through the intestinal walls and into your blood stream.
Hi Steve,
I've been having an allergy attack with sneezing, itchy eyes throat & ears, running nose. It started after we closed up the house last night. My kids had the same reaction.
Come to find out, the air conditioner is leaking where it attaches to the furnace instead of draining out the hose that is provided. Apparently the water is not going into the tray but is collecting inside the furnace and bubbling out through one of the seems. (When our dehumidifier was running, it must have controlled the moisture level, so we didn't have the same symptoms. A power outage disrupted the unit and we didn't realize it wasn't running.) I wanted to shut the furnace and A/C down so mold spores won't blow throughout the house when the fan runs. However, the other idea was to use the fan to dry out the mold. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks,
I would call out an engineer and have him check out the entire heating-AC system and make sure there's no build up of moisture and that all drain lines are working properly.
If there is some kind of fault and water accumulation, it could be that even with all systems running you are circulating enough spores and VOCs to impair your immune system sufficiently to allow a Candida overgrowth. Some mycotoxins are very immuno-toxic and will damage certain immune cells while overstimulating others.
Steve,
An engineer...do you mean a house doctor or
To my knowledge, this is a new problem. We've never seen it before.
Two-three years ago we had a guy come out and vacuum out all the duct work after we had mold contaminate the house when the bathroom flooded. We had mold tests run which showed several species which were higher in concentration in the house compared to was what outside.
The frustrating part was no one seemed to be able to tell us what the safe or hazardous levels of each mold was. Very little info was available to us to tell us anything about each mold cultured or what it's toxic effects might be. Even my environmental allergist had little info. He did advise we move out of the house until it was cleaned up--which we did.
The whole process was quite expensive and it seemed we got very little in return for our investment.
Did you ever hear the story of the farmer who sprayed his crop every year with pesticide.
After 10 years, he decided to stop wasting his money, since he'd never had a problem with bugs
The idea of mold control is prevention. Mold will make you sick. Lack of mold won't necessarily make you better.
By engineer, I mean heating engineer.
I know what you mean about domestic testing for molds and toxins. Currently there are not really any good measures or standards that define what constitutes a problem.
I wanted to carry on and say....
To my mind simple presence of a toxic mold in anything more than trace (background) amounts should be cause for concern, since they can reproduce explosively at the first sign of moisture.
I think the mould has grown explosively under the boards in my bathroom, from when the bath overflowed through the ceiling. As soon as i venture upstairs the smell hits me, it is EXTREMELY STRONG earthy/fusty/mould, even with the door closed, and is getting much worse as the days pass. It is a south facing window that gets plenty of sun, i have put some cling film over the toilet, put the lid down and put the plugs in the plugholes. Also ran a dehumidifier that has only collected about a litre of water, heating is on full still and windows shut. Is there anything else i can do? Should i have the dehumidifier downstairs rather than upstairs, as the problem is in the floorboards? or is it a matter of waiting for it to die down.
Ann
You need to hire a mold specialist to inspect the problem. I use them all the time in my legal practice. they will tell you what needs to be done. from the sound of it, you have some remodeling that will need to be done. look in the telephone listings under mold remediators or mold abatement.
john
Thanks John, I am starting to look into this.
Ann
John & Ann & Steve,
Steve, I believe my immune system was damaged by the mold issue in our home we had a few years back. The following will help explain.
John, Glad you're helping people from the legal end. As you will see from my story below there are very good reasons to hire an attorney. Also, as you probably know, some mold remediators are better than others. Some call themselves specialists when in fact they don't have a clue. The work is very specialized and few have the proper credentials.
Ann, after our bathroom flooded and the water poured from the bathroom down into our basement, there was no way to really get rid of all the moisture sandwiched between the vinyl flooring in the bathroom the subflooring and the basement ceiling. After cleaning everything with bleach, we used fans, dehumidifiers, opened the windows to get fresh air.
When the remodelers came to replace the vinyl flooring, they did it improperly. 20/20 hindsight they should have done it under negative air pressure. As soon as they lifted the flooring, mold spread throughout the house like someone was spraying a firehose of mold spores. I was outside talking with my neighbor. We were standing at the end of my driveway when the mold hit us full force. For her, it was just an annoying smell. For me, it literally knocked me over. It gave me an acute headache, ear, nose, eye itchiness and an all over ill, sick feeling that lasted for days. I couldn't even venture into the house to grab my purse. It hit me so hard and became an invisible barrier around my house. I had to call the insurance company from the neighbor's house, and got permission to stay at a hotel for two nights while they sorted things out.
The insurance fight was unbelievable. I stood alone against the insurance company. My environmental allergist doesn't get involved in disputes with insurance companies or court cases. (However, now I realize he could have been subpeoned). I had to relay things he was telling me to do (such as: don't stay at the house. It needs to be cleaned. Mold can grow explosively in 24 hours, etc...) to the insurance man. My insurance man didn't know anyone he could call to investigate the mold claims. It was all very new to this and he just didn't have any names of mold remediators. He said we could call someone. I spent days calling to try to find someone. The guy who actually came out answered my questions correctly, but in the end I think he scammed us.
At the time, I wish I'd had a good attorney working on my case. But like I said, I stood alone. Probably with the help of a good attorney, the house would have been deemed uninhabitable--permanently instead of temporarily.
You may not think it is possible that your whole house could be in jeopardy because of the problem in the bathroom. But it isn't such a far-fetched idea. It may also be compromising your health.
Hopefully, my experience will help you or someone else.
BTW, after this happened. Our insurance company dropped us for three years. (Oh, that means the flood happened about 4-5 years ago not 2-3 as I said before.) SInce we were high risk, we had to get special insurance.. Very expensive for little coverage. WHen we were contacted and the insurance invited us back, the policy had changed. They have provisions in the new policy that says they will not pay for damages caused by mold.
So, again, 20/20 hindsight. Some very valuable lessons have been learned by us.
Again, I really wish we'd had a good attorney through all of this. It would have been difficult to fight for a healthy person. Extremely difficult to fight for an ill person.
pace quite a story.. thanks for posting, i sure others can learn from it...
Pace,
What an ordeal for you! its bad enough been ill, without been given the runaround, if only people knew how it felt.
Leading up to the bath overflowing i had been sneezing non stop, blocked nose, that got raw bleeding scabs, itchy/sore eyes, slightly wheezy like i couldnt take a full breath and could hardly sleep, cat napped throughout the night. I blammed our en suite, but the real culprit was a crop of black decaying beans in front of our house, the folliage was a mush, it didnt bother anyone else, because we live very remote. Once the crop got sprayed off with Roundup (they go for animal feed) my symptoms improved. But shortly after this the bath overflowed......
Looking back on some of my allergy tests MUSHROOMS sit up there at the top, even though i havent hardly eaten them. I dont think a lawyer could help me, because the mould is in our own home.
I am thinking about a caravan, they have used ones in the farmers weekly, they are free if you pay for delivery, but i am worried about mould in them too, the only plus is they would have finished offgassing.
Also, i am going to stop eating sweet potatoes for breakfast, because i have noticed about ten minutes after peeling them, once they start frying, they get small black specks on them that grow. I am probably fuelling the fire. Thing is, i will only have meat broccoli/cabbage and potatoes that i am not intolerant to. Also i wonder if this exposure is counter balancing any benefits i should get from the Diflucan.
My husband says he cant smell it, but my son and eldest daughter can, they say it is very STRONG. It must be like John says it bothers/effects some and not others.
Sorry to moan on. Ann
Hi Ann,
Do you have homeowners insurance for your house? If you do, check your policy for coverages. Our old policy covered water and mold damage. However, let's say the hot water heater burst and water flooded the basement damaging causing damage. The policy would not replace the hot water heater, but it would cover the cost to anything the water damaged. The insurance company will also first try to determine if it was a maintenance thing. i.e. if the homeowner didn't properly keep up repairs/maintenance and that is why the tub overflowed, the toilet leaked or whatever. (My insurance tried to say that about our situation, but it wasn't the case--thankfully I won that round.) I needed a lawyer to get the insurance company to pay for the expensive remediation costs. A sharp lawyer with proof could have also gotten some medical bills paid.
I know things are different in the UK, so not sure how things work there. BTW, what is a caravan?
I was just thinking how great it is to correspond through the web to my friend, Ann who is in England. Love this modern technology.
YOu must have been to see the molding beans go. However, just think for a moment. Rotting, molding beans, sprayed with Round up, sent to cattle for feed. Cattle are slaughtered for meat or dairy cattle are milked for milk. The meat and milk are processed and end up in the grocer and soon to end up on your dinner plate. Kind of scary, huh!
Regarding sweet potatoes. I had to stop them, too. Mold was an issue. The other day we were at the grocer and walked past the potato bin. It was moldy and hit me like a wall. It gave me a headache and I became very irritable. It's funny my hubby smelled it too, but it didn't hit him in the same way. He used to be sensitive, but not not as much or in the same way. Sort of like your husband. Hey, does he have as much exposure to the mold spores as you and you children. Is he mostly gone away at work? This could be why.
Pace,
It is so nice to talk to someone who actually understands the problem. If only it was as simple as mind over matter like some people around me beleive.
We do have house insurance, i just hope it covers accidental damage, i am going to have a good read through the policy.
A caravan is a mobile home, i just wish it wasnt winter coming, because they dont hold out the cold very well. The owners of caravan sites give them away when they start to get old, they like all their caravans/sites to look nice for the holidaymakers, disposing of them is very difficult due to enviromental regulations, this is why they only want the delivery fee.
I think i am reacting FAR WORSE than the rest of my family because my immune system has been weakened by the metals etc. I dont leave the house much and when i do it isnt for very long, so i have been breathing this mould much of the time. I thought been inside was safer. I really have become a recluse, mainly because of exposures outside home!!
I think i maybe react to ALL grains SO BAD because of the traces of mould they have. How are you with grains? I might CAREFULLY try the more refined ones, rather than whole grains, to see if that makes any difference.
Ann
Ann,
I know what you mean about having someone who understands. A damaged immune system is really difficult for friends/family to comprehend the vast array of symptoms, the longevity of the illness, the severity etc.. I've often thought that if this was really understood, most of us at the forum would be hospitalized getting specialized care. Instead we are on our own making our way in the dark with educated guesses.
It is lonely to say the least. Recently, I had a family member tell me this forum was a deterrent to getting healthy. :0 It through me for a loop. But then, when I think of what it would take for friends and family to really understand, I'm glad for them that they don't.
I think we should all show more compassion especially to those with "hidden" illness.
It's interesting that you're the one with the most severe illness and that you've also spent the most time in your home thinking it was safer. I agree that the amalgam, crown problem also heavily contributed to your breakdown in health. I had a similar mercury/nickel crown problem, too. I'm still trying to decide if I want to do the DMPS challenge test. Is that the test you did to find out the main problem was nickel? Or did you do another test?
Thanks for clearing that up for me about the caravans.... Yeah, I can see what you mean about the cold, and winter's not far away.
I react the same way to grains as you do. For some reason sprouted grains work better. I've experimented with buckwheat (really a fruit) quinoa, amaranth, etc. but they all leave something to be desired.
Take care,
Pace
Thanks Pace,
I found out about the nickel poisoning after doing Toxic Effects Screen through Biolab, the first test i did said i had 50% damage to a band of liver enzymes consistant with exposure to a toxic metal. After getting root canal extracted and replacing amalgam fillings i repeated the test, the damage was down to 20%, they identified the metal this time, it was nickel.
I didnt realise mould could be so dangerous, i have just read an article that said mould spores were used as biological warefare agents, killing thousands of people. I always thought they caused respiritory problems, but from what i have read cerain strains can cause certain organ damage, ie Penicillium affects urinary system and kidneys. They can be inhaled or ingested.
I am going to phone Dr M to see if she can point me in the right direction towards get air tested.
Ann
Good Ann. I think Dr. M is a good place to start.
Ahh, so you've been reading a bit about mold toxicity? Surprising, isn't it? Toxic mold is very dangerous. BTW,
Do you have that article about the use mold during warfare? I would be interested in it.
Thanks,
Pace,
The site is:
www.disasteradvice.co.uk/mould
It is about haf way down, under the heading, How Dangerous Is Mould.
Called Dr M, but she is away untill next week. Also called an expert, he said if it smells fusty/earthy there IS mould, he said to be very carefull and NOT to put bleach on it, as this will create more dangerous chemicals, he is in London (four or five hours away) So it looks like i will have to look into the house insurance before doing anything.
Ann
Hi Ann,
Thanks for the website. I will take a look at it after I post this to you.
I just wanted to mention that one mold expert (he was in another State and too expensive to bring him to my home) told me that mold behaves like an animal. Picture a skunk backed into a corner. When it feels threatened it will spray. When mold is "threatened" by a strong chemical like bleach, it reacts by sending out more spores to protect itself and to find a new, more hospitable place to keep growing. This mold expert said you actually have to "sneak up" on the mold by using a detergent (not sure what kind) to wipe it away. The main thing is not to have the mold send out spores. It's another good reason why negative air pressure should be used to remediate a mold damaged area.
Keep me posted with what happens.
Pace
jeez Pace-
you've had a rough go, but in my line of work, i hear these stories all the time. Even when i can help, it gets expensive. for mold remediators, its like everything else, you have to check around, make sure they have the proper license and have a good reputation. same for docs or contractors (contractors are the worst). a lawyer with experience in mold cases can help.
mold is a tricky issue in law law, as only some people are sensitive to it. many scientists will say that mold is not a real issue. most people don't care, until if affects them.
Very, very true. All too true.
Sometimes even when credentials are checked, a person still gets scammed.
Glad you're helping people with this issue. I know lawyers sometimes get a bad rap, but they can do a lot of good, too.
There was a mold case around here that is still in litigation. Cash was paid for an $800,000 home. Leaky roof. Black Stachy... Mold was found. House was torn down. New owners suing former owners to get their money back. Former owners dispute the claim. Not sure of the outcome.
John,
I think I would have had a strong case because of allergy testing done previously which already showed I had strong sensitivities to molds. I'm not a lawyer, but to me, that is significant. The flood problem, while annoying to others was very dangerous to me.
Either the right information didn't come at the right time or if it did, I was too brain-fogged for it to register.
I just hope my experience saves someone else the health problems and money it has cost me.
they can be tough cases. if you have to prove the owners knew about the leak/mold... have to come up with some good facts.
Hi Ann,
The first thing I would do is to get an air sample. Call an abatement company or environmental testing company. Maybe you can get the name of someone to call from Dr. M or another environmentally knowledgeable dr.
If there is anything, get an attorney right away. You need someone to look out for you and protect your interests.
All has been hovered and i have damp dusted everywhere.
Thanks
Ann
