Sinuses
Really good to hear from you again(as well as Susan in Olympia). I'm doing well. I've not had much time to visit the forum this last year though.
The last few years my sinuses have been bothering me more than usual -- rather painful yet not stuffy. I finally bit the bullet and asked my doctor for some amphotericin B nasal spray. It has helped quite a bit this last few weeks. One day I also added a drop or two of NCD (natural cellular defense) thinking that it would mop up some of the fungal toxins. I'm not certain if the one day applicationo of NCD helped or not. I sort of think it did.
Hi Polly, I wonder what's got your sinuses all worked up lately. Do you think there's a hormonal component, as is the case with me? I'm approaching menopause rapidly (but not fast enough to suit my tastes :() and it seems all hell breaks loose from time to time, without any warning. This includes sinus problems like I've never had before.
I'll have to look into your approach, the amphotericin B nasal spray. I don't even know what it is, until I go look it up. Is this an antifungal treatment, perhaps? I also don't know about NCD & will have to investigate that, as well. As usual, Polly, you've given me a new direction to explore. I hope you'll come back & report on your progress with the spray & NCD.
Take good care, and thanks...

Amphotericin B and Sporanox are the two antifungals that usually work in the nose. My doctor ordered the spray from Home Care Solutions pharmacy in Maitland, Florida. I was speaking with someone else whose doctor gave him Nystatin for the sinuses --- but my doctor said that usually wouldn't work.
Polly, I think I'm going to ask my doctor about amphotericin nasal spray. When I mentioned it to him last Friday, he didn't know about it, though he said ENTs use some other sort of antifungal spray, a name I hadn't heard, something like gantricin, or starts with a G. Is this spray something that's available through rx only, or could I order it directly myself? I really want to give it a try.
thanks,
Thanks for the specifics on the nasal spray, Polly. How's it working for you so far? Is it something you'll use indefinitely, or just until symptoms abate?
Just a quick word of caution about the ampho-b: I had a terrible reaction to it. Please be careful.
Lu, thanks for the heads-up. Did you react to the nasal spray form of amphotericin B, or was it taken orally? I'm sorry to hear you had such trouble with it. From what I read, it's an old drug & has caused some problems in people, but that the nasal spray form avoids those problems by staying localised in the nose, largely without incident. Maybe you are saying otherwise?
thanks,
Sorry, I meant to specify is was NOT the nasal spray. It was the powder form.
Luckily, I've not noticed any problem with the nasal spray. So far, it has been really good for me. I don't wake up in pain like before. My sinuses are still sensitive to cold air --- I noticed that when I went to a friend's house where she uses airconditioning. The real test will come with colder weather.
I get the impression that you use the nasal spray until the symptoms are gone, or I would guess at least until you reach a plateau. The pharmacy said to give them a week's notice if I need a refill.
Your sinuses are sensitive since they are probably still inflamed. Amphotericin B is very soothing to the sinuses for the most part. I am very allergic to mold and have been on Amphotericin B on and off for several years. If you are exposed to mold or fungal spores, then you need to stay on Ampho B for some period of time.
Thank you Tricia. I know I get ill if I scrub off the mold in one of our showers. I've taken to wearing a mask and then taking a shower directly after cleaning it. We have already removed the wallpaper in that bathroom. I'll just have to be more diligent in my cleaning efforts. That should help. (I hate scrubbing.)
