Diflucan
I seem to be getting NOWHERE FAST with diet and natural antifungals, so i am seriously considering starting my Diflucan tommorow.Kidney pain is one of my main symptoms again, i am convinced that as my main problem was metals mercury/nickel, it only makes sense that as metals accumulate in kidneys, candida grew like mad there in an attempt to protect them.
I have just read the patient information leaflet and it says as follows:- mucosal infection of mouth 50-100mg once daily for 7-14 days, mucosal infection of throat or elsewhere 50-100mg once daily for 14-30 days, fungal skin infections 50mg once daily 2-4 weeks, genital infection 150mg single dose, INTERNAL FUNGAL INFECTIONS caused by cryptococcus 400mg first day then 200-400 once daily for 6-8 weeks!! I know it is everywhere, toenails, throat, scalp, ears, eyes, skin, small bowel etc.
It seems for internal candida it has to be taken for a long while. What i am worried about is i only have a one month supply of 50mg caps. Would i get rebound effect if i didnt kill it all? I dont weigh much and dont think docs take peoples weight into consideration enough when prescribing. The patient leaflet makes me want to run a mile! so dont want to be on it too long, just wondered if there was such a thing as Diflucan taking the edge of the candida??
Any experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Ann
Hi Ann,
I was just thinking about the Dilfucan experience I had and decided it was the right thing for me at the time as it really knocked down the yeast. The problem (I think) was stopping too soon. I took a loading dose of 400 mg on day one and then 200 mg per day for two weeks. This was taken following antibiotics to clear up a sinus infection. On another occassion, I took 200mg a day for an extended period of time: 12 weeks. After one week of die off and two weeks of mild flu-like symptoms, I felt great! I felt completely cured. Energy levels were normal, clear thinking, normal eating habits. It was a tremendous 9 weeks. However, when I stopped, the yeast grew back with a vengeance and this time it was resistant to Diflucan. It was at this point that the Multiple Chemical Sensitivities went through the roof and I became allergic to EVERYTHING. Before, I only had slight MCS. My theory is the diflucan killed the yeast. WHen the yeast died, it left holes in the mucosal lining the intestines and I developed Leaky Gut. If I had to do it over again, I would taper off using the Diflucan instead of just ending it. I would be more careful when with foods. I would eat tons more probios. I would limit my exposure to any and all chemicals.
My liver function tests during the 12 weeks were fine. Never elevated. Still, I think you should get a baseline reading of liver function first. Then check liver function while on the meds. Also, be sure to take it long enough. Source out the orginal problem to keep the yeast from re-growing.
I am thankful for what the Diflucan did. I had started out with Nystatin and strict diet, but the yeast morphed and tentacles burrowed into deeper tissues. The Diflucan really relieved alot of that. I literally could feel it receding. As it receded, pain receded and function returned to stiff, arthritic, painful tissues and joints.
In every situation you need to weigh the benefit vs. the side effects. Sometimes it isn't worth it, but other times it is.
BTW, some very sick AIDS patients take 1,000 mg diflucan per day without any liver or kidney problems.
Hi Pace,Stopping too soon concerned me too, i am due have my #3 EPD in three weeks, so if the Diflucan goes okay i will ask my doc to send me some more and postpone the EPD for one month.
I know i have leaky gut so will try to heal this before stopping Diflucan.
Thanks
Ann
I know you are responding to Ann, but I wanted to get more of your thoughts on something you mentioned. I am wondering if my repeated bouts are related to a leaky gut that didn't repair either. I have read or been told that EFAs help repair lining so the gut doesn't leak, but is that the only thing to repair that? What do you do for the leaky gut? Any suggestions? Thanks a ton!
Hi re-lapser,
I'm doing the EFA's for leaky gut, also. Before I tried taking glutamine but it produced way too much ammonia. I've heard glutamic peptides help repair the mucosal lining but do not cause the ammonia problem. I haven't tried it yet, so I don't know how it will work for me.
Thanks for the info. Is there such a thing as too many EFAs, do you know? Also, do you know if one omega is better for that than another? I just wonder because my doc had me taking bulked up threes, but now she's got me on sixes and i thought people had enough sixes and too many sixes was risky... Anything else you know about this would be helpful. I need to research it more... So much to study!
I should really change my name because no one will want to hear what I have to say if I am a , but here is my experience with Diflucan. It really is just to say I have used it and survived!
I took Diflucan for three months three years ago, but I took 100mg every other day. In retrospect, the every other day thing was probably to help my body and liver get through it, but my doc didn't give me any thoughts of advice on my liver at that point. What I can tell you is that the Diflucan did get rid of the candida. When I first started, I tested with higher candida levels than my doc had ever seen. We tested after about four or five months and there was no sign of candida overgrowth at all. So it did help. The die off was crazy, but I am now thinking both times it could have been because of my liver more and I am wondering if the improvement I have seen over the last week on the protocol (my week six) may be because I have started using things for my liver.
This time, while I try to learn why I had the relapse (was it self-induced? did I never have enough good guys reestablished to help me maintain the right flora? did my gut never fully repair, etc.), I am on it again and paying much more attention to my liver as is my doc after the first month when I came in and looked like I live dead person! Again, I am taking 100mg every other day and this time for six months. The length of this treatment does make me more concerned now for my liver, but I think between an herbal supp from my doc and chlorella, I am hoping to be alright.
So I guess I am just writing to say that I did it and survived and it killed the candida and I am doing it again and hoping for the best! As a previous person posted, we are all so different so who knows. If you can't get more Diflucan or don't want to, have you tried rotating the herbal anti-fs? I recall previous posts where people have recommneded it and have seen success with that. It is something along the lines of three a-fs on a four day rotation, like four days of one and then four days of the next. I would suppose the theory is a resistence one, but I can say that I don't see myself resistent to Diflucan after much use or at least I don't think I am. I have some signs of improvement including my thrust so it is killing something!
(I have also taken herbals, too.)
Best of luck with your decision!
What type of herbs are you taking to support your liver? I take something with artichoke, tumeric and dandelion.
Liz,
I have the same with tumeric in one pill and dandelion in another, but my other supp also has the following:
burdock root
milk thistle
dandelion root
uva ursi
stinging nettle
fringetree
celandine
I really can't vouch for any of the ingredients specifically, but altogether there seems to be some relief though... Cheers!

Thanks Re-lapser, every other day does sound kinder to the liver. I was wondering about continuing with the natural antifungals alomg with the Diflucan, i will keep taking the chlorella too to help mop up toxins.
Its good you are seeing some improvement, how are you supporting your liver?
Ann
I have intermingled the a-fs before. Just be careful not to do too much. I take the chlorella and also an herbal that contains:
Burdock
Milk thistle
Dandelion root
Bearberry (which I believe is uva ursi which is good to kidneys too)
Stinging nettle
Fringetree
Celandine
Other than that, I am new to the liver unlike others such as john and sans sucre! That is all I can report. To our livers and our health! Fingers crossed.
I think that bearberry is also anti-fungal

have you considered liver performance? no easy way to measure this on a test, but if your liver is not producing enough bile, the terrain of your entire gi tract will be off, you will not be able to properly digest food, and candida and all manner of microbes will makes themselves at home in your gi tract. if you haven't, check into liverflushing and other ways to increase liver performance and bile production (peppermint, artichoke and many other things can help stimulate bile, but its better to clean the liver first).
Thanks, John with or without the "g"! My doc did some test on my liver about two weeks ago and I don't have any results from her. I am going to follow up though. I am not sure exactly what the test was. I will also look into the flushing. I am so happy to be here on the forum and learning more! Maybe that is the key that I have been missing????! Give me that bile! So nice to feel optimistic for a change! Thanks again!

mainstream liver tests are not very helpful at all. the tests only show problems when the liver is near failure. most with a clogged up, poorly functing liver will show fine on the tests. so, i would not put too much stock in that test unless it is something special i don't know about.
John, Dr M also told me that mainstream LFTs only showed when damage had already been done and not if the liver was struggling. Biolabs Toxic Effect Screen is a much more sensitive test for liver.
Ann
Thanks Ann. That's good info for people to know. Besides the test you mentioned, you can learn alot about liver function just by paying attention to how your gi tract is performing on a day to day basis.

Thanks for the insight. I will attend to my liver no matter the results and learn about the process. Thanks again. I tell you, this journey we are on is a complication one, but I believe it is a very important one too...
I was on it for less than a week and it had a noticeable effect on the candida, but it kicked my liver's a** in a bad way. Be careful.
I took 100 mg of diflucan for 7 days b/c I had oral thrush which did not respond to other antifungals.
It had no effect on me, but you may be different. I didn't want to stay on it any longer then that, I wimped out. I was worried about my liver. And my doctor hadn't even discussed checking my liver prior to use and during use. Basically all he cared about was his pay check. For some people though it works right away. For me it made my eyes feel tired and they look discolored now. I hope you have better luck. But if you plan to take it for a long time, push to have your liver function tested!
I'm on antibiotics for another #$%$^ bladder infection today. I'm going to start diflucan when I'm done. I'm scared to take it,and scared not to.
Sheryl, I am just getting over a bladder infection(I hate those things). I had to take doxy for it. I was dreading it also. This time, I took a supplement called EHB,while on the antibioitic. It is a little acidic for me due to the other bladder condition I have but it probably wouldnt bother you. It helps with infection and yeast. I think it kept me from reacting to the doxy. You have to order it I think. It has a lot of good antifungals and antibiotic properties. I have had it a while and cant remember where I got it. YOu could probably find it on the net if you are interested. It is by NF formulas.
Sheryl, My problems began with bladder infections, one in March 04 and another in June 04, they werent typical cystitis, they really lingered (3 weeks) bleeding, swelling, but no urgency, the antibiotics hardly helped, after the second flare i lost lots of weight and felt like i was dying, very probably started my last eighteen months of health problems.
Are you taking plenty of Probiotics with your Antibiotics?
Same here - scared to take the Diflucan and scared not to.
Good Luck. Ann
This does not sound like a typical bladder infection. What did your doctor say about this and are you still having problems?
Hi Liz,
I have leukocytes in my urine ALL THE TIME, but when bladder plays up i DONT need to keep going to the loo, as with cystitis, but i do get pain, swelling and bleeding, also if i ignore symptoms they progress to infection, drinking lots of water only makes it worse... which doesnt make sense. Even after completing the antibiotics problems continue...THREE WEEKS each time with grains, one week with other foods. The doctors i have seen think it is allergy through and through. It is much better if i adhere to the meat and veg.
Ann
