Coconut Sugar

labels can be deceiving! I'm finding out that you can't always believe the nutrition facts on labels especially when it comes to sugar content. I have a 14 ounce can of coconut milk which says 0 grams of sugar per serving, however there are 13 servings in a can. I believe I've read if there is less than 2 grams of sugar per serving, they don't have to list it. In other words each serving could have 1.9 grams times 13 servings. I think this should be against the law IMO.

I noticed a new brand of coconut water at the HFS today and it was about a 10 ounce juice box which contained 16 grams of sugar. This sounds right to me because anything that has to do with coconuts must have some sugar.

Hey. You are right that laels are not accurate ut when it comes to coconut milk, the stuff that comes from the white meat of coconuts, there is no sugar. It is nearly all fat and that stuff is supposed to e some of the est anti-yeast things there are.

Coconut water on the other hand does have sugar... You can make a very good kefir out of it too.

But coconut milk is pretty much fat... And again has strong anti-yeast properties to it.

I don't think that the anti-fungal properties in either olive oil or coconut oil are strong enough to have any effect on candida levels in the body. Maybe outside the body the anti fungal properties of oils can repel fungal growth in the oil itself, but I don't think they are nearly strong enough to be anti-fungal within the body. Even presription anti-fungals do not seem capable of killing Candida within the body (much of the time). This is not to say that coconut oil isn't a good oil choice, but I don't think it will have any effect on directly dealing with Candida issues.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caprylic_acid

Caprylic acid is the common name for the eight-carbon straight chain fatty acid known by the systematic name octanoic acid. It is found naturally in coconuts and breast milk. It is an oily liquid with a slightly unpleasant rancid taste that is minimally soluble in water.

Caprylic acid is used commercially in the production of esters used in perfumery and also in the manufacture of dyes.

Caprylic acid is known to have anti-fungal properties, and is often recommended by nutritionists for the treatment of candidiasis. According to nutritionist Erica White, caprylic acid is excellent for dealing with candida in the intestines, which are frequently colonized by candida; but, being a long-chain fatty acid, it has difficulty in penetrating fatty cell wall membranes. Some nutritionists therefore recommend starting with caprylic acid when treating candidiasis, but moving later to other plant oils (e.g. oil of cloves, or oregano) which contain fatty acids with a shorter carbon chain that can more easily penetrate tissues in the body such as muscles, joints, and sinuses.

Caprylic acid is also used in the treatment of some bacterial infections.

Caprylic acid, aka, octanoic acid, must be covalently linked to the serine residue at the 3-position of ghrelin, specifically, it must acylate the -OH group, for ghrelin to have its hunger-stimulating action on the feeding centers of the hypothalamus, though other fatty acids may have similar effects. End of article.

None of the coconut products I've ever had have contained the desirable anti-fungal 'rancid' flavor mentioned in this aticle. It's possible that it is often processed out of the coconut oil or milk.

Hi, coconut oil did nothing for me except empty my wallet.

Hello, I thought I had read on here that coconut water had no sugar but the milk did. I wish I could remember the brand name of the coconut water I saw today, because it had no added sugar but still contained 16 grams of natural sugar. I'm going to look it up again at www.calorieking.com I know the milk has alot of fat, but it tastes sweet to me and I think it made me break out which means it fed the yeast in my body.

I really wish it didn't because I know it's good for you, can kill yeast and I need the calories.

Hi,

I know I have asked you this before, but the fact that you are soooo reactive makes me wonder again. Is it at all possible that the coconut milk/juice is actually acting as an antifungal for you and the reaction you get is a healing reaction? I once read that one of the biggest mistakes candida sufferers make is mistaking a healing reaction for a candida flare, and bailing too soon. I know I have been guilty of this. I decided to ride some of them out instead of bailing on the thing (I mean, as long as it was something that made sense logically - like something I knew should be helpful and not harmful), and did come out the other side. Candida flares and healing reactions can have the same symptoms. I just feel bad that you seem so limited, even more so than one should be on a candida program, IMHO. :(

Hello, well, actually I have a %100 fullproof way of knowing the difference between the two. When I eat something that has fed the yeast I get red acne-like bumps that break out in my skin fold areas (armpits etc). This has been the warning sign for me for years, but until three years ago, I had no idea it was candida. I can tell by looking at the breakouts whether I have eaten something that has fed the yeast. When I'm doing good, my skin clears up and I feel better. When I have screwed up the skin breaks out and then I have to go thru the die-off again (the worst part). The problem is, I eat so many meals a day, I can't always narrow down which food caused the problem. It's really that simple with me. Some foods either feed the yeast or they don't, and if I can figure it out, I remain pretty healthy.

But, as I feel better I seem to get amnesia and add back foods that I know I can't eat. This is the vicious cycle I can't seem to break, mainly because I miss those foods.

Someone answered...
I hear ya. Yeah, if you notice a reaction, and then later notice die off as you recover from that reaction, I agree with you - that is a candida flare. I also can really relate to the amnesia thing. I have the same problem. And then there are other times I will try to rationalize eating a food, such as, "I should be able to eat this now that I am feeling better - let's find out". Answer is often "NO"! But, recently more and more the answer has been "yes". I have even been able to have a little bit of coffee here and there without my liver going wonkers which is real progress for me.

Thanks for being patient with me as I kept asking you if you were REALLY having a candida flare. I know it can be annoying when you know your own body, and some dingbat on the forum keeps insisting things are not as you know they are! :) :) :)

Hi, NO PROBLEM! I know everyone here just want's to help.

I'm still learning lessons about this stuff. Like you said, you seem to think you can add foods back, but often it's not the case.

Sometimes it is o.k. though. I can eat tomatoes now and I could probably also have some coffee if I wanted it. It's a very slow healing process and I had let my candida get to stage five. I'm really lucky to be alive.

Can you eat nuts or nut butters? I still can't which is frustrating.

Someone answered...
Can you tell I'm having a die-off day? I put an apostrophe in the word wants.

Someone answered...
Man, you are ok. I could not even type on my worst die off days, so you are ahead of me, lol.

I guess the reason I have been kinda hounding you about the possibility of having toxicity instead of a flare, is because when I am in die off, my food reactions get exacerbated, and certain things I had been able to re-introduce become (temporarily) reactive again, until the die off cools down.

Ah, nuts and nut butters! I LOVE them. I was not able to eat them for about 2 years, but have just been able to enjoy them again, as long as I am not in die off. If I go into a die off, I get a slight allergic reaction if I eat them. But, I used to just die if I ate them, so major improvement there. So far, I find almonds and walnuts to be the best for me. I use almond butter now with no probs. I think I will veer clear of peanuts tho for the mold issue.

Cool that you can do tomatoes now. I was unable to eat them the first year, but have no probs now. At one point mid-recovery, I could eat regular tomatoes and cherry tomatoes, but reacted to grape and roma ones. Now, they all seem ok. Weird, huh?

I remember the days where typing was impossible. The fingers and the brain would not work together. I'm having a little trouble this evening but not too bad. I still can't write worth a damn though. I mix up the letters.

I am jealous that you can eat nut butters! I can have a handful of nuts every once in a while but not the butters.

Funny about the tomatoes, but it doesn't surprise me. This candida is so hard to figure out.

Someone answered...
If it makes you feel any better, I could tolerate whole nuts before I could tolerate the butters, so it is a matter of time. One day, so will you!

Someone answered...
That does make me feel better! I love nut butters and I could really use the calories.

If I could just stop making mistakes, or giving in to the cravings I could probably heal myself to the point of giving them another try.

Hey, have you looked into your thyroid? I put on all the weight I lost from taking thyroid.

Here is how stupid I am. We bought a new washer/dryer and I kept blaming the dryer for shrinking all of my jeans, lol. It never dawned on me that I put on enough weight that they wouldn't fit anymore. Moron, lol!

Someone answered...
Hi, my mom had to have her thyroid removed when she was 30. I've always wondered if I have a problem with mine, but I've never had it checked.

Tell me more about what happened with you? Do you take thyroid medicine?

Someone answered...
Mine did too! Same age. That is odd huh?

Well, my doctor said my thyroid was in the low end of normal. He put me on a very low dose of thyroid so that it wont cause me to have extra PVC heartbeats. It took about a month before I noticed that I didn't have a constant ache in my muscles anymore, I wasn't cold all the time and that my dryer was shrinking my clothes, lol! I was 140 pounds when I got sick. I went down to 97 and got back to about 111 where I stayed for years. at 5' 7", that is too thin. Now I am 137 and have so much more energy. I have better color in my face (could also be from iron).

I tried to do it w/out drugs at first, adding lots of sea veggies to my diet etc..but it didn't help. I get my blood looked at periodically and my thyroid levels are better on the synthroid.

I think there is a more natural form..Armor? Something like that, but he felt it would trip my heartbeats so we went with synthroid.

It was just a basic thryoid level test..I have heard they don't really show much and you need to do some sort of other testing, but for me this worked.

I know some doctors will start you on a very low dose even if your bloodwork looks ok and you can see how you feel from it.

Someone answered...
You can find many google results that show the thyroid sparking liver issues but in Chinese/natural health it is seen as the other way around.
