Candida Overgrowth
Just ran across this site while searching for a way to help myself. I know deep down that candida overgrowth is my problem and I just don't know where to start.
Any thoughts?
Candida yeast overgrowth is a symptom of a compromised immune system or damaged gut microflora.
The first step is some confirmatory work to actually confirm the presence of candida. If confirmed, the next step is to check immune status and gut microflora status to figure out what's causing the problem.
Candida can be caused by overuse of antibiotics, heavy metal toxicity, exposure to environmental pollutants, exposure to molds and mycotoxins, hidden food allergies etc.
If you can think of any sources of possible exposure (living in damp house, pesticide spraying, living close to factories, airfields, photocopiers in the office etc) or took lots of antibiotics then this is a good first step.

I think if you have one you soon have the other
I work in the gas safety industry ..i recently investigated a case of possible carbon monoxide poisoning involving an entire family It looks like the household were exposed to low levels of Co over at least the last 12 months. They all complain of an unrelenting doctor baffling malaise. Listening to the list of symptoms It's clear they have a candida infection
>>I think if you have one you soon have the other<<
Very true indeed
On the other hand, Candida by itself will not overcome a healthy gut flora, due to the antifungal compounds and hostile aerobic millieu produced by the Bacteria.
Damage the gut flora however and Candida will immediately fill the vacuum and will quickly produce an altogether different millieu which is not conducive to the healthy bacteria. Once the Candida is populating the gut, it will place an extreme load on the immune system.
You know all this of course
During the 12 months your family was ill, were they given a course or two of broad spectrum antibiotics?
The family in question do not speak English very well they are of Indian origin , The man of the family showed me boxes of meds he had been prescribed , I'm not sure what they all were ,he did have unexplained high BP I know that his wife was visibly shocked when I mentioned brain fog , & bloating, IB symptoms ..yes yes she said & my daughter. I did of course point out to them the possible link with yeast .
It all makes sense, the toxic rout that is, seems too much of a coincidences all the family with a mystery illness following exposure to toxic gases or perhaps more accurately exposed to an altered atmosphere. That is until you consider what smokers inhale , they do not seem more prone than non smokers to yeast. .so , don't know for sure I did wonder if those who cook with gas are more susceptible to illness ??
Years ago my environmental allergist had me switch all appliances from gas to electric.
I went to a friend's house with a new gas stove and became ill when she turned the oven on.
I have heard such stories before , it's only after our enforced self education with this that we can form some sort of an opinion To me Hypoxia has figured very much in my illness ..even an enclosed space such as an office has given me problems ..About 3 years ago I was involved in a RTA when they attached the oxygen monitor to my finger they thought the thing had developed a fault , my oxygen levels were that low. After a bit of a panic that transmitted to me my oxygen levels increased. Chuck that in with a few environmental toxins & bingo another bites the dust ,yeast wins again. I think everyone walks a tightrope with health , a news item a couple of days back on environmental toxins told of a family tested for toxins that tested positive for over thirty toxins including a pesticide that was banned 30 years ago ..I take it, it was DDT
Here is what I did. I typed "candida diet" into a search engine and read as much as I could about it, then I picked the strictest version and got started right away. If I had remained on a strict diet from from the start, I would probably be just about cured by now, but I made alot of mistakes. There are no shortcuts, you must follow the diet for a long time. And also, cultured vegetables have helped me more than anything else. Good luck.
When you say strict diet have you never eaten any fruit or grains? How long have you been doing the very strict diet? Thanks
For me, NO fruit and no grains except for a little spelt bread once in a while. I've been on the diet nearly three years and made many mistakes. I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel, if I can just stop making those mistakes and stay on this diet. It has taken me this long to elminate problem foods. That's the hardest part.
You have done well Brett to be strict for so long (inspite of some mistakes!). In your opinion/exerience do you think this strict diet actually "kills" the yeast?? I often wonder if strict diet is enough because when I went for a colonic the therapist said the diet only stops the yeast from growing it doesnt kill it. I think I remember you saying you get die-off and liver pain/burning when you do the diet strict...so I guess it must do something?
I've been noticing recently that at certain times, and not always, sour foods seem to illicit digestive secretions that appear to be hostile to candida. So it's not the food directly that is killing the candida , but when the food interacts with my digestive system that seems to work against Candida. If your digestion works pretty well in spite of having Candida, this might not be a factor for you.
I have no doubt that starving the yeast kills it off. The toxins produced from die-off are what causes my liver to ache.
