Bacteriophages have been used in the old Soviet Union for decades with no ill effects as an alternative to antibiotics. Research in the US stopped when pennicillin and other broad spectrum antibiotics were discovered. Researh has resumed in the last few years because of the antibiotic resistant bacteria that have developed as a result of the overuse of antibiotics. Phages are very specific as to the bacteria that they attack, thus they would be useful for candida sufferers as an alternative to broad spectrun antibiotics, ie. they will not destroy our intestinal flora along with the infection. However, it takes more time to provide a treatment because the doctor must first find the correct phage to treat the infection. I do venture capital and have taken an interest in investing in a company doing research in this area because of my candida problem, but I have not yet identified the best company. There is a group that operates a clinic in the Republic of Georgia that provides treatment for serious bacterial infections that do not respond to antibiotics. This was featured on 60 minutes several years ago and sparked my interest. I took note of the rescent approval by the FDA as a good sign, but we are far away from it being available for treatment of infections in humans. Anyone who has a serious non treatable infection should look into phages. You can search the internet re bacteriophages to find more info.

wow that is fascinating.

as you might imagine my first reaction was negative but i didn't really know anything about them..

i do get concerned though when they adulterate our food because people who are extra sensitive can be screwed. the article here mentioned possible toxic residues from the bacteria, and some info i just googled said that the immune system may try to attack the phages.

also i am not a science person but it just seems creepy to be bringing extra viruses into the body. next thing you know, they'll be adding giardia to diet food because it is 'effective' ;)

You are exposed to viruses all the time, most are harmless. From what I have found out there are no side effects. Here is a link to the clinic that I mentioned. I think that it is the same one that was on 60 minutes.
